Animal Village

INRA scientists will first present their work on feed efficiency as well as results from a study on grassland systems.

We will show breeders the new tools acquired to perfom high-throughput phenotyping. The data acquired help us to define more finely important genetic traits for tomorrow's farming. Individual ingestion is measured using a system with troughs, characterizing the meals. We performed studies on the interactions between genetics and health. The objective is to select animals for their resistance to mastitis and for calves, to respiratory diseases. We also worked on feed efficiency of beef cows and the genetic determinism of their sexual precocity and their development.

Genomics for Dummies

A workshop will be dedicated to genomics "for Dummies" in order to recall the basics of selection in the genomics era!

We will also discuss grassland systems. For fourteen years we have been carrying out experiments using two feeding strategies. In the first system, we are interested in the expression of dairy potential; in the second, cows adapt to a local resource, grass. We perform measurements on the prairies. The data collected are necessary for the characterization of grassland systems. Our goal is to define the overall resilience of the system outside of climatic and economic incidents. We will present the tools used on a daily basis for management of pastures in order to help those who wish to return to a grassland system.
