Conference on effective size and inbreeding depression

Conference on effective size and inbreeding depression
The "Réseau de Ressources Génétiques Animales" of the Animal Genetics Division held a conference in Paris (AgroParisTech, 12 & 13 May 2016). Over 100 scientists and managers of domestic, wild and zoo animals participated. Speakers addressed the following topics: effective size, inbreeding depression and essential biodiversity variables.

Context and challenge

The "Réseau de Ressources Génétiques Animales" – R2GA, was initiated within the Animal Genetics Division.
It aims at putting geneticists and managers of populations of domestic, wild and zoo animals in touch.  It currently involves scientists from GABI (Jouy-en-Josas) and GenPhyse (Toulouse) teams of the AG Division.

Results

This conference was organized by the INRA, AgroParisTech and FRB, with the sponsoring of EcoScope, CRB-Anim and SAPS.  It was held at AgroParisTech (Paris, rue Claude Bernard) from 12-13 May 2016.  Fifteen speakers from many organizations (AgroParisTech, Allice, CNRS, ENVT, FAO, INRA, MNHN, Wageningen Univ.)  addressed the following topics:

  • - Effective size, its estimation and its use in zoological gardens, domestic and wild animal populations;
  • - the inbreeding depression, the balance between conservation and selection,
  • - the notion of genetic load and genetic purging,
  • - Genetic indicators and essential biodiversity variables.

A poster session was organized, with the award of the Jacques Bougler Prize.
This conference has been generally considered to be a successful event. It has fulfilled its purpose with the merging of different scientific communities and population managers.
